Moon viewing is an event to appreciate the full moon. It held on August 15th in the lunar calender, but it has been held on September 13th in the solar calendar. Moon of this evening is called "Chusyu-no-Meigetsu".

This event has been held from the Heian period(794-1185). At the time, aristocrats ride on the ship, looking at the moon reflecting on the water, and enjoyed traditional Japanese poetry.

Also,moon viewing is a kind of festive ritual for upland farming especially of aroid potatoes.

People offer aroid potatoes freshly harvested, so in some areas it is called "Imo-meigetu".

On this night, people customarily offer,autumn fruit and crops. Additionally people offer pamnpas grasses blooming in the field at this time.

These are placed either on the "Engawa"(Japanese veranda) or by the window so that the moon is able to recognize them.

"Tsukimi-udon(soba)" is a cooking which expres the moon viewing. This is udon'noodles in soup topped with an egg and seaweed. This udon have been liked by many people.
