Third Monday of September is Respect-for-the-Aged Day in Japan. This day is designated as a national holiday. Respect-for-the-Aged Day was Septemnber 15 until 2002. but by the revision of the law, it was changed to third Monday of September.

Begining of the SRespect-for-the-Aged Day is a day of old which was proposed in 1947 in Hyogo Prefecture Taka County. It started when a meeting was held for the purpose of making villages with the wisdom of the elderly person. At first,it spreads in Hyogo Prefecture, and then next it spreads to the whole country. Many municipal governments present the elderly with commemorative gifts and Japanese confectionery.

At home, pepole give a present to grandparents and enjoy a meal together. The gift is various, such as bag and clothes, but recently, flower gift is increasing.
