Equinoctial week

equinoctial-week

Equinoctial week has been called "Ohigan" in Japan. It is the time to see again one's own ancestors who have passed on to the next life, two times twice a year in spring and autumn.

The first "Ohigan" is three days before and after Vernal Equinox Day. The second is three days before and after Autumnal Equinox Day.

Therefore a total of 7 days including the equinox day are called Ohigan.

By the way, Spring Equinox Day and Autumnal Equinox Day has been said to be the date on which the length of day and night are the same. The days are designated as national holidays.

Spring Equinox Day is around March 20. Autumnal Equinox Day is around September 23. The days change every year.

Peach flowers are used a long life and amulet from old time in Japan. More people decorate peach flowers with field mustards and tulip.

People visit their family ancestor's grave in the equinoctial week. People clean the grave, offer flowers such as chrysanthemum and lily and "Ohagi" (rice dumpling covered with bean jam).

Also,Ohigan means the turning point of the season. There is an old saying,"No heat or cold lasts beyond the Equinox Day". It means the summer or winter season will end around that time.
